Nearly half of AfB's employees are people with disabilities - making AfB an inclusive company. This special business model has many advantages for partners, employees and society.
Inclusion companies fulfil a very important social mandate and thus assume a special social responsibility: they undertake to fill between 30% and 50% of their jobs with particularly affected severely disabled people according to § 215 SGB IX. Inclusion companies thus realise inclusive and equal participation in the general labor market for severely disabled people with a special need for support.
AfB is a wholly owned subsidiary of i500 gAG. The common goal: to provide 500 people with disabilities throughout Europe with jobs that are subject to social insurance contributions. Currently, around 45% of the 500 AfB employees are severely disabled.
AfB has already received several awards for its inclusive business model, including the award "European Social Firm of the Year 2020".
Generally, non-profit status refers to an activity that serves the public good in its effect (according to Section 52 of the German Tax Code). It is essentially defined by tax law. The charitable activity must be directly, unrestrictedly and permanently directed towards the common good and may only be carried out in a disinterested manner.
"No one may be disadvantaged because of his or her disability," states Article 3 (3) of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, there are 7.8 million severely disabled people living in Germany (source: destatis, 2017). Inclusion companies ensure the professional participation of men with disabilities. Every partnership with a company helps to achieve this.
By reducing inequalities and promoting inclusive and self-determined lives for people with disabilities, our partners contribute to the achievement of the so-called global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in cooperation with AfB. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations and apply to all 193 member states.
Sheltered workshops are designed to help people with disabilities find their way into the world of work or to enable them to integrate into the workforce. The working conditions in many sheltered workshops are significantly worse for the employees, for example because the minimum wage regulation does not apply there. Jobs in sheltered workshops are also not subject to social insurance contributions. A step from the workshop to the primary labor market is often associated with a number of hurdles.
An inclusion company, on the other hand, is an (almost) normal company that offers jobs with social insurance for people with and without disabilities on the primary labor market. There are no distinctions in working conditions. However, a performance that is close to the general labor market is required, as inclusion companies have to compete in the market.
Questions and answers for applicants
There are many good reasons to work in an inclusive company. Companies that have adapted to the employment of people with and without disabilities often score with good working conditions. These result from:
- the company's social commitment and strong value orientation
- the diversity lived among colleagues
- raising awareness of individual strengths and support needs
- the focus on health management
- the barrier-free workplaces

Earnings depend on the position and the industry in which you work. You will receive the usual or collectively agreed wage for this or negotiate the payment with the employer in each case. Here, too, inclusive companies do not differ from other companies.
Of course. Inclusion companies specialize in the employment of people with disabilities thanks to their inclusion-oriented structures. AfB enjoys working very closely with many sheltered workshops, so that internships are repeatedly arranged which often lead to employment.
